Online Practice Workshop for Students of RWTH

This year again, DSA welcomes students from different master courses in computer science and electrical engineering at RWTH Aachen University to a three-day practice workshop. Like many other events, this year's workshop will take place online. The workshop is part of a long-term cooperation with the Institute of Software Engineering at RWTH Aachen University. Students will put into practice the content of a previous lecture on The Digital lifecycle of vehicles as part of the Internet of Things (IoT). The creative process ends with the presentation of the solutions developed to a large - virtual - audience. This year's task is to extract information from CAN frames and present them in a appropriate way. After an initial period of self-study, the participants will work in teams to develop software for processing the data, which will be made available to them via a web socket on the Internet. The students work on the task in small groups and are supervised in a virtual meeting room. A joint meeting in the morning and in the late afternoon provides a structure for the activities.

The pandemic accelerates the adoption of new formats, not only in research and teaching, but also in the business world. Unlike in the past, prospective computer scientists cannot get to know DSA on site. All the more reason why the online format represents an exciting challenge for all participants and marks another step in the direction of digitization.

This year's online workshop will also provide participants with a hands-on approach to software development for vehicles. In this way, students can expand their studies with practical knowledge while also making initial contacts with companies in the industry at an early stage. It is not uncommon for this to result in internships or even later career opportunities.
