CPS Innovators Day 2025: Students develop solutions for future mobility

On the 5th of November 2025, DSA hosted the first CPS Innovators Day. Students from RWTH Aachen University and FH Aachen University of Applied Sciences formed teams to work on real challenges in the fields of mobility, production and logistics. In this way, the event ties in with the DSA-funded endowed professorship in Cyber Physical Systems in the Computer Science Department at RWTH Aachen University. The professorship helps to strengthen the ties between science and industry and drives forward research in this future-oriented area.

With the support of experts from the DSA Group, the students developed concepts, prototypes and solutions for various tasks in the field of cyber-physical systems. Mentoring sessions and a pitch training rounded off the programme. After working out their solutions, the teams presented the results to a panel of experts, including two university professors from the computer science departments of the two Aachen universities. The members of the panel were impressed by the technical depth and creativity of the work shown in the presentations – bearing in mind that some of the students had only just started their studies.

The first place was won by a team that developed approaches for measuring the consistency of ready-mixed concrete in the field of industrial logistics with the objective to reduce CO₂ emissions. The young researchers impressed the jury with an innovative idea for determining the consistency of ready-mixed concrete and can now look forward to a 14-day trip to South Africa, including an internship at DSA/S4. Due to the high quality of all contributions, the jury spontaneously decided to award a second recognition prize, honouring the exceptionally high standard and commitment of the teams.

The event was an impressive demonstration of how practical and inspiring cooperation between industry and research can be, especially when it comes to young talent. At the same time, it showed how strongly mutual exchange promotes innovation in the field of cyber-physical systems.
